Frank ☼ Bach on X: "Thrilled to announce some @monk_losangeles end of year shows across Ontario and a dip into Montreal with @sm__worldwide and @lowheavenband!🕊️ 12/08 - Toronto. ON @ The Baby

I pushed through the pain of my infected wisdom tooth and made my way to La Sotterena to see Single Mothers perform their set. Their show definitely made all my efforts well worth it.

They started their set off cool and collected with “Enough for You”; its steady beat got the crowd in the right mood. There were a decent amount of people gathered around the stage, some headbanging along to the beating of the drums and some thrashed their entire bodies, forming a mosh pit of organized and respectful chaos. Either way, everyone in the crowd seemed to be having a great time, enjoying the live performance.

Andrew Thompson, Single Mothers’ vocalist, was quite charismatic on stage. He cracked a few jokes here and there, interacted with the crowd while singing, and told brief stories about the inspirations behind their songs. Thompson explained that the song “Baby Bird” is about going to the mall with his mother, and how they were too poor to actually buy anything, so they would shoplift as much as they could.

Their performance was truly captivating and intense. Their touring drummer Brandon Jagersky crushed every single song, seeming to not even have broken a sweat. Thompson used his facial expressions as he sang, properly relaying the emotions written into the song’s lyrics. The band played in great harmony, not once missing a beat. They really played a fantastic set. Watching musicians perform is always so mesmerizing, especially ones as talented as those four.

Their set was short but thrilling. They played songs old and new, such as “Crooks,” “Dog Parks,” “Undercover,” and even “Christian Girls,” a track on their self-titled album, released all the way back in 2012. They kept a really good, high energy for the entire set. Thompson danced and kicked his legs around, stomped on the stage, and jumped up and down to the beat of each song. Every member danced along to the music they played, clearly hyping up one another. They played a really well-rounded set, Single Mothers are not only excellent storytellers and musicians, but also fantastic live performers. I’m so glad I caught their show just in time; it would’ve been disappointing to miss out on such a great one.
