Shaina Hayes, known for her unique blend of folk and pop, has released her latest single, “Sun and Time.”
This track follows her well-received single “New Favorite,” released in November 2023. “Sun and Time” is the second single from her upcoming album “Kindergarten Heart,” set to debut on February 23rd via Bonsound. The album’s launch is scheduled at Le Ministère in Montreal on April 4th, 2024, with additional performances planned across Quebec during the spring season.
“Sun and Time” is a musical piece that addresses the all-too-familiar struggle with the winter blues. The song is characterized by its drum-forward sound, layered over a moody, strumming electric guitar. It marks a slight shift towards indie-pop yet retains Hayes’ signature tender, folk-infused style. The lyrics of “Sun and Time” evoke the warmth and vibrancy of summer, offering a message of hope and perseverance through colder times.
Accompanying the release of “Sun and Time” is a music video, a collaborative creation by Flavie Lemée and Charles-David Dubé. The video incorporates footage from Hayes’ summer tour across Quebec, aligning with the song’s nostalgic and summery essence.

“Kindergarten Heart” follows Hayes’ independently released album “to coax a waltz” from 2022. The upcoming album has been co-produced with Francis Ledoux and David Marchand from the band zouz. The trio has intricately woven themes of nostalgia, childlike wonder, and lightheartedness into the album, resulting in a collection that is both whimsical and earnest. The album also explores the broader concept of memory, not just of childhood but of past experiences in general, reflecting on the act of looking back to inform the present or to honour past memories.
Shaina Hayes, originally from Shigawake in Québec’s Gaspésie region, grew up influenced by a diverse range of music from artists like Feist, Joni Mitchell, and Regina Spektor to country icons like Hank Williams and Dolly Parton. After studying agricultural sciences at McGill University and returning to her rural roots, she ventured fully into her music career. Her journey includes opening for notable bands like The War on Drugs and The Barr Brothers, alongside her continued engagement in farming.
