Theremin, stylophone, Ondes Martenot, and a neon-haired mystery figure. Montreal multi-instrumentalist Sébastien Lafleur released the single and music video for Baby, c’est qui? today, the first track from a micro-album arriving this April. The project, titled Sébastien Lafleur featuring pan flute and keyboards, continues a prolific two-decade run.
Baby, c’est qui? is an electro-beach track produced by Lafleur and Antoine Lussier, built around a sun-destination romance gone sideways and the sharp bitterness of something or someone that’s vanished. The instrumentation sprawls: Lafleur handles guitars, autoharp, keyboards, programming, theremin, and stylophone, while Daniel Áñez adds Ondes Martenot and Sacha Daoud plays Latin percussion. Backing vocals from Claudia Thuot and Christiane Charbonneau sing the song’s central question in chorus. Lussier recorded bass, added programming and keyboards, and then mixed the track, with Jean-Philippe Villemure handling mastering.
The video pairs the song with artwork inspired by board games like Guess Who and Clue, a visual nod to the track’s cryptic narrative. Lafleur’s discography includes L’Album Mouillé, L’Album Brûlé, Le Minisoufflé, L’Album de Vent, L’Album de Boue, and Strates. He also wrote Le Lit (À qui la chance?) for actress Romane Denis, released the winter duet À moi la nuit with Aloysius Bell, and performs in Lafleur & Marcie and the children’s project Les Fleurs de Pinotte.
