Less than a month before the release of Light the Sky, local Acadian hip hop duo Radio Radio unveil the title track from the upcoming album, set for release on February 19 via Bonsound. The album is available now for pre-order on iTunes and Bandcamp (vinyl/CD/digital).
“”Light The Sky” is an analogy that refers to a lot of things. Light has many representations in the outside world, and it also emanates from within,” explains the duo. “Here, the sky stands for the ultimate canvas on which to create art.”
The band celebrate the release of Light The Sky with an album launch in Montreal on February 22nd at Club Soda.
Light The Sky is the duo’s first entirely English album. Their previous four records, including 2010’s Belmundo Regal (shortlisted for the Polaris Prize and nominated for a Juno Award) were sung in Chiac, the English-influenced French dialect spoken in communities across the east coast of Canada. Creating an English album came naturally to Gabriel and Jacques, who grew up Moncton, New Brunswick and Clare, Nova Scotia respectively. Both are Acadian communities where anglophones and francophones rub shoulders on a daily basis.
The high energy electro and hip hop beats on Light The Sky were created by Shash’U (Fool’s Gold Records), DJ Champion, J.u.D. and Alex McMahon (who also produced the album). The album travels across unique, but familiar territory, with songs depicting, often satirically, symbols of the western world. Songs like “Busy” and “Happy Hustler” reference life in the fast lane, while “Sweater Weather” delves into the complexities of relationships and “Remodel (Mike Holmes)” mockingly pays homage to home renovations, a common reality for many in their mid-thirties.
