Pulp to Release First Album in 24 Years

Pulp will release More, their first studio album since 2001’s We Love Life, on June 6 via Rough Trade. The album was recorded over three weeks in November 2024 at Orbb Studio in Walthamstow, London, with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Blur), marking the shortest recording period in the band’s history.

“This is the shortest amount of time a Pulp album has ever taken to record,” frontman Jarvis Cocker noted in a written statement. “It was obviously ready to happen.”

The album arrives two years after the Sheffield band’s 2023 reunion tour and includes contributions from longtime collaborators. Richard Hawley and Jason Buckle each wrote music for one song. Richard Jones arranged string parts for the Elysian Collective, while Brian Eno and members of the Eno family provided backing vocals on one track.

The lead single, “Spike Island,” is accompanied by a video directed by Cocker himself. Created using artificial intelligence, the clip reworks Rankin and Donald Milne’s photographs originally featured in the Different Class inlay. In the accompanying press release, Cocker described the process as a kind of “inquiry into artificial intelligence,” feeding prompts into an AI image generator to see “where the computer led” him. He added that the weekend he began the project left a lingering effect: “I went out of the house & kept expecting weird transformations of the surrounding environment due to the images the computer had been generating.”

Two songs on More were revived from earlier demos dating back to the late 1990s. “Hymn of the North,” the album’s closing track, was first performed during soundcheck rehearsals in 2023 and debuted live in Sheffield that same year.

The album is dedicated to founding member and bassist Steve Mackey, who passed away in March 2023 at the age of 56.

Following the album’s release, Pulp are set to co-headline two nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this September alongside LCD Soundsystem.
