Orbit Culture + Basterds @ Fairmount Theatre

Orbit Culture stopped at Montréal’s Théâtre Fairmount on Friday as one of their few headlining spots while part of Slipknot’s 20th Anniversary tour. This was my third time seeing Orbit Culture, but the first time seeing them as a headliner.

There were only two bands that night, and the first was Montreal local unit, Basterds. I’m not always a huge fan of the metalcore scene, but it does have its own merits. They did their job of pumping up the crowd, but I wasn’t a fan of this particular band on Friday.

From the time the doors opened until about halfway through Orbit Culture‘s set, the headliner’s merch table was busy for this rising band. I’ve seen Orbit Culture three times now, and this was the longest and first headlining set that I’ve been able to catch.

I do think that they were taking it a little bit more conservatively for the length of their show due to also being part of Slipknot’s tour, as they played 11 of their songs compared to the 7 they played opening for Fear Factory and Machine Head back in February. No complaints there, especially since they were able to stop in Montréal for a show while Slipknot enjoyed a day off in Toronto.

After Basterds finished their half-hour set, it felt like it took the same amount of time to turn over the stage to Orbit Culture. The crowd seemed more excited to see Orbit Culture, and the influx of people into the pit and the push to the front confirmed it, even in the small room of Théâtre Fairmount.

It took a song or two before the mosh pit was in full swing for Orbit Culture. Appropriately, it was “The Strangler” that got the crowd going. By the time Orbit Culture finished with “Vultures of North,” the crowd was eager for more and didn’t want the show to end.

I have a feeling that they will be back again as a headliner soon.
