New Music Friday: Montreal Talent Shines in a Massive Week of Releases

It’s another packed New Music Friday, and this week’s lineup offers everything from introspective ambient to chaotic metal and sleek alt-pop. Best of all, there are a few familiar names with Montreal ties that we’re especially excited about.

Let’s start with local standout Ambre Ciel, whose debut album Still, There Is the Sea arrives via UK label Gondwana Records. It’s a genre-fluid journey—equal parts dream pop, experimental classical, and ethereal electronics—and marks a bold first step for this Montreal-born composer and multi-instrumentalist.

Also worth noting is Finn Wolfhard, who may be best known for Stranger Things, but has steadily built a parallel music career. While he grew up in Vancouver, his family has roots in Montreal—his father, Eric Wolfhard, hails from the city—and Finn has spent time here over the years. His new music shows a maturing sound that leans into slacker rock and alternative textures.

Beyond our city, the rest of this week’s drop is equally stacked. Addison Rae continues her pivot into hazy alt-pop, while Beatie Wolfe & Brian Eno deliver a meditative collaboration that feels like a sonic retreat. Electronic legends Death In Vegas are back, and Little Simz, MARINA, and McKinley Dixon all offer lyrically rich, genre-bending releases.

Metalheads are spoiled with new music from Gaahls WYRD, KATATONIA, Austere, and KING PARROT, while fans of psychedelic, indie, and experimental music can dive into projects from Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Purelink, Phoebe Rings, and TURNSTILE.

It’s a wild, wide-reaching week for new music—and Montreal is proudly part of that landscape.
