Country music fans in Montreal had a blast in March! On Thursday night, we were thrilled to welcome back the talented Californian country rocker, Nate Smith. Last summer, we had the pleasure of meeting him at Lasso, and the anticipation was high for his Through The Smoke Tour stop at MTELUS.

The opening act was the incredibly gifted Fayetteville, GA, singer-songwriter, Zach John King. He performed solo with a single backlit spotlight, and the crowd was singing along to every song. Many of us fell in love with him late last year when he opened for Connor Smith. He made it clear that he has a bright future ahead of him. He even shared how Nate Smith inspired him and played Nate’s favourite song, “Cold Shoulder.” He also introduced a brand-new song that he had just written, called “I Deserve a Heartbreak,” which was an absolute hit! I’m a huge fan of his song “Slow Down,” and I can tell that this guy is going places.

The stage was dressed like a local dive bar, and we were ready for a wild night out! Nate Smith came out with attitude, rocking a leather jacket with a Canadian flag on one sleeve and the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem on the other. He was ready to party. From the first song, we knew we were in for a treat. He started with “What Alone Looks Like,” and then rocked a crowd favourite, “Whiskey On You.” He kept us on our toes. I’ve been waiting to hear his new song, “Nobody Likes Your Girlfriend,” which he co-wrote with Hardy. I wasn’t disappointed; it was a banger live.

The party kept going—maybe a bit too much—because at some points, I couldn’t hear Nate over all the chatter in the venue. That’s just the way it is these days. It would be great if people would listen and enjoy the show. One can only hope that basic respect for fellow concertgoers will return.

Back to Nate, he’s killing it with “Bulletproof” and “Under My Skin.” For the fun-loving part of the show, we had some cool covers that really brought the house down, like “She’s Country” (a Jason Aldean cover), “All The Small Things” (Blink-182), “My Hero” (Foo Fighters), and finally “Chasing Cars,” a cover of Snow Patrol. To end the night, he played his massive hit, “World On Fire,” and I swear I saw Montreal on fire! That was something else!
What a great show! Montreal welcomes Nate back anytime and can’t wait to see him again.
