Montreal drag artist and performer Aizysse Baga will release a debut album, Divacore Vol. 1, on July 31, timed to a hometown release show and the opening of the city’s Pride festivities. Aizysse is a multidisciplinary artist from Montreal’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community who has worked the city’s independent scene for more than a decade, moving between music, artistic direction, and cultural event production. Their live history takes in Fierté Montreal, Taverne Tour, and the MURAL Festival, along with venues including Bain Mathieu, L’Escogriffe, and Quai des Brumes.
The album’s most recent single, “Neon Sound,” is an electro-pop collaboration with Rita Baga, the drag mother of the House of Baga and a contestant on the first season of Canada’s Drag Race. Aizysse described the pairing as a long-held goal: “Working with Rita was a dream come true. She’s been one of my biggest inspirations since I started drag, and collaborating on a song together felt surreal. This project is more than music, it’s a dream realized, and a celebration of the family we’ve built through art.” Built on an 80s-leaning synth palette, the track’s reference points run from Robyn and Kylie Minogue to Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama.
Aizysse follows the release with two Quebec festival dates. A Popstars Queers set lands at Montreal Pride’s Loto-Québec Stage on August 1 at 8:30 pm, and a slot at the Festival de musique émergente en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (FME) follows on the Fizz Stage on September 5.
