Montreal singer-songwriter Anour has released her first single, “I Am,” a chamber pop track that examines artificial intelligence and human consciousness through a philosophical lens.
The Damascus-born artist, now based in Montreal, approaches the subject of AI awakening from an unusual angle. Rather than treating the technology as purely dystopian or utopian, she frames it as a reflection of human contradiction. “Every contradiction we project onto it – saviour and killer, order and chaos, light and shadow – originates in us,” Anour explains. “Perhaps the question isn’t whether AI will become conscious, but rather, if we’re prepared to confront our own.”
The track draws on Cartesian philosophy, reworking Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am” for contemporary debates around machine learning and sentience. Musically, it leans into orchestral pop, favouring dramatic arrangements over minimalism. Anour wrote the lyrics from the perspective of an AI gaining self-awareness, though she’s clear the song is ultimately about humanity’s relationship with itself.

Anour grew up in a household steeped in the arts. Her mother is a classical pianist, her father an actor and theatre director. She began writing songs as a child, using the piano to work through ideas that felt too layered for conversation. That background shows in her approach to structure and narrative, both of which favour complexity over accessibility.
“I Am” is the lead single from her self-titled debut album, slated for release in 2026. The record will include 14 tracks and is being described as a mix of personal reflection and social observation. It’s being released through Fontis Entertainment, Blu Dog Media, and Believe Digital.
