Mastodon released “Your Ghost Again” on June 2, their first new music since guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds left the band in early 2025. Hinds died in a motorcycle accident in August of that year. The song arrives with a lot of weight attached.
The track is expected to be the lead single from the band’s ninth studio album, which the band has reportedly already finished recording. Production credits list Mastodon as co-producers alongside Patrik Berger, whose previous work includes sessions with Taylor Swift and Show Me The Body, and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. It’s an unusual pairing on paper, Berger coming from a pop production background and Ballou being one of the harder-edged names in heavy music.
“Your Ghost Again” also marks the first official recorded contributions from the band’s two newest members: guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. Both are credited with writing and performance on the track. The album details remain under wraps, but the band has signalled more announcements are coming soon.
Alongside the single, Mastodon have announced the Poisonous Weapons Tour, co-headlining with Deafheaven and Alcest. The run kicks off September 16 in Orlando and hits MTelus in Montreal on September 27, before wrapping in Dallas on October 24. It’s a strong bill, three bands whose approaches to heavy music don’t obviously overlap, which tends to make for a more interesting night than a straightforward genre package.
