An all-Aussie night at Le Ministère
An Australian delegation with artists Japanese Wallpaper, Allday and Mallrat took over Le Ministère, on the 22nd of September. All three of them part of the indie scene in Australia, mostly playing on stations like Triple J and Triple J unearthed, both government-funded radio stations which shine a light on young Australian talent. You wouldn’t expect a big crowd at the venue. In fact, even though Mallrat played on a much bigger stage at Osheaga, it seems like she didn’t convince the festival’s audience to attend this show back in August. Japanese Wallpaper opened, followed by Allday and Mallrat.

While Japanese Wallpaper and Allday seemed much more experienced and at ease in performing on stage, it definitely showed that Mallrat hasn’t had the same experience…yet. Her songs are definitely great to listen to with headphones, as the beats and lyrics carry your mind away. At Le Ministère, her stage presence wasn’t quite making the cut and taking away from the quality of the music the fans were expecting. No bad feelings, it was sort of expected for such a new solo artist: with no bandmates to fill up the stage and with the beats playing through the speakers, her DJ and friend Denim wasn’t enough to bring a good level of energy. Next time she’ll tour in North America, I wouldn’t be surprised if she already stepped up her live game.

On the other hand, Allday gave a solid 45-minute set. Even with some technical problems at the start, he performed his best songs from his three studio albums, dressed up in a suit like the rest of his band. Definitely the highlight of the night, per the quality of the sound and the energy he brought into the small room. Quite the contrast with Mallrat, his live performance proved he is a truly talented hip hop artist, who can rap and sound great outside of the studio.

Thanks mates for the good night, and see you in a couple of years, most likely in a much bigger venue!
