If I could describe this spectacular show in two words, they would be “Euphoric” and “Mesmerizing”.
M83 took the stage opening with the first song from their recently released album, “Fantasy”, which was the backbone of this tour.
As they transition songs into “Oceans Niagara,” lead singer Anthony Gonzalez and keyboard player Kaela Sinclair belt out “Beyond Adventure!” This has the crowd bobbing along, melting into the vibes that M83 are known for.
The first five songs of their newest album are all moulded together into the first stretch of the show, taking even their casual fans on this synthesized indie/electric rock adventure. I noticed that throughout the show, they added in older songs that ONLY incorporated the same theme of “Fantasy.”
Such songs as “Run Into Flowers” and “Don’t Save Us From The Flames” were personally some of the first songs I fell in love with all those years ago, and I find they fused into the Fantasy album as if they were just released as well.
“We Own the Sky” starts off mid-song in a quicker pace than originally recorded until the main drop, where drummer Julien Aoufi solos back into the leisurely ambience this song creates. As this song drifts into the closing number of the first set, the first high-pitched note of “My Tears Are Becoming A Sea” hits us all straight in the heart. If anyone wants to clear their mind without using a mind-altering substance, I recommend closing your eyes and listening to this song. This synopsis-bursting track will leave you feeling lighter than ever.
As in classic MTL concert fashion, the crowd stomps their feet and chants OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ to bring back all members of the band…because you can’t leave an M83 show without hearing “Midnight City,” right!?
The iconic five notes that make up the song begin as the crowd starts going mad with excitement, sounding just as amazing as when it first came out in 2011. The talented multi-instrumentalist Joe Berry slaps on the sax as he performs the solo that really ties the whole piece together, making everyone on the floor jump like he was.
Lastly, “Mirror” and “Outro” were played, which left the perfect amount of euphoria in us to end a fantastic Friday night.
