I’m so glad it’s winter! That’s not something I’d typically say, but if you’ve ever been to l’Escogriffe in the middle of summer, you’ll know how hot it gets inside, even if it’s not packed. Tonight’s Luca Fogale show is completely sold out. If this were July, sweat would be dripping from the ceiling!

Before Luca takes the small stage, though, we are treated to an all-too-short set from Nova Scotia’s Rachel Bobbitt. I’ve been wanting to catch Rachel live since I discovered her in 2022, thanks to her incredible song, More, which was one of my favourite tracks of the year. I also got to interview her for this very site.

Tonight Rachel is playing a stripped-down set with her guitarist and co-producer, Justice Der and the tiny venue perfectly suits the more intimate songs. Her voice is exquisite. Every person in the room is instantly transfixed, and it’s clear a few are already fans. To win over a few more, she drops in a sweet Leonard Cohen cover and the aforementioned More, with Justice’s sublime guitar work adding that extra cinematic feel to the song. If there’s any actual justice in the world, she’ll be headlining far larger venues very soon.

Juno-nominee Luca Fogale looks primed for success. Tonight he and his band captivated the audience with his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. The Vancouver-based singer-songwriter delivered a mesmerizing performance that left the crowd spellbound throughout, managing to remain just the right side of earnest.

Fogale’s emotional ballads filled l’Escogriffe with an intimacy that made the audience feel like they were a part of his story and witnessed a private show with an artist unlikely to be playing these small venues for much longer.
Playing a mix of brand-new songs and older material, the setlist was perfectly balanced, showcasing his range as an artist. Fogale’s passionate delivery and raw, honest lyrics draw you in as he switches between his piano and guitar. The musicianship was excellent from his fellow musicians and Luca’s appreciation of the audience between songs had them completely engaged.

Overall, it’s clear why Fogale is considered one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists right now. If you have the chance to see him live, don’t hesitate – it’s an experience you won’t forget.
