Kathleen Edwards is set to return with Billionaire, her sixth studio album and first since 2020’s Total Freedom. Due out August 22nd, the record was co-produced by Grammy-winner Jason Isbell and engineer Gena Johnson, both of whom also contributed musically. The announcement arrives alongside two new singles: “Save Your Soul” and “Say Goodbye, Tell No One.”
The new material follows a quieter few years for the Ottawa-born singer-songwriter, who took an extended break from the music industry prior to her 2020 comeback. That time away—during which she ran a coffee shop in Stittsville, Ontario—has continued to shape her perspective. Speaking about the new album title, Edwards said in a statement, “The word ‘billionaire’ is used in such a caustic way these days, but we should all want to be billionaires in life—rich in experience, friendship, purpose, and the pursuit of the things that bring us joy.”
Billionaire will feature contributions from a roster of respected players, including bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Chad Gamble, keyboardist Jen Gunderman, and sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer on backing vocals. Isbell, who is credited with guitars, synths and vocals, also appears on the record. Johnson, known for her work with Brandi Carlile and Chris Stapleton, shares co-production duties and plays piano.
Edwards has been a fixture in the Canadian alt-country and Americana scenes since the release of her debut Failer in 2003. While not a mainstream chart presence, her influence among peers and critical acclaim have been consistent. Total Freedom marked a notable return after an eight-year hiatus and was met with praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and Pitchfork.
More recently, she was honoured with a cover of her material by Waxahatchee and Brennan Wedl at a Nashville event. That nod, along with this new full-length project, signals Edwards’ continued relevance in a genre she helped shape.
