Jason Hook unveils new band FLAT BLACK and debut album

Guitarist Jason Hook, best known for his time with Five Finger Death Punch, has announced his new band FLAT BLACK. Hook, who left Five Finger Death Punch in early 2020, has since teamed up with a trio of younger musicians to form the new group. They have signed with Fearless Records and are preparing to release their debut album, Dark Side of the Brain.

The album, produced by Hook alongside Chris Collier (Korn), was recorded at Hook’s home studio and The Hideout in Las Vegas. Hook expressed his enthusiasm about the new project, saying, “No more people hounding me about when the album will be available. I’m so excited to share these songs with the public. Dark Side of the Brain is personal, every lyric came from a real place.”

Hook also discussed the upcoming tour with Godsmack. “I feel like FLAT BLACK is a secret I’ve been keeping for three years,” he said. “It’s finally time to unleash this band on the world. I’m grateful to Sully from Godsmack for giving us the chance to get out on the road and play for such an amazing group of fans.”

Joining Hook in FLAT BLACK are singer Wes Horton, bassist Nick Diltz, and drummer Rob Pierce. Horton, who began his musical journey at 13 thanks to his sister and Guitar Hero, has found a perfect fit with the band. “I love the fact that my bandmates prioritize songcraft,” he said, “it allows me to be the singer I’ve always wanted to be.”

Diltz, the son of a legendary rock photographer, was inspired to pursue music after watching a VHS of U2 performing at Red Rocks. “Seeing fans clamouring for a piece of Bono was a vision that never left my head,” he recalled.

Pierce, who hails from Nashville, chose music over racing go-karts, inspired by his fourth-grade band experience. He set up his first drum kit in his dad’s car shop, learning to play next to 1,000-horsepower engines. This background contributes to his energetic drumming style.

The band is eager to share their music live, with Hook highlighting the track “IT’S YOUR LACK OF RESPECT” as a key example. “The song is blatantly defiant, which is what rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be,” he stated. Another track, “JUSTICE,” is described by Hook as a “metallic anthem” with lyrics directed at those who have wronged you.
