When I think of a fictional town of Manville, I picture a sprawling man-cave. There are beer taps everywhere, random pool tables, a barber shop, too many hardware stores, BBQ pits, muscle cars and sports on giant screens as far as the eye can see.

Rock-n-roll was always filled with boys who never grew up. Parties, substance abuse and back-stage antics that are coming to light with the #metoo movement.

Mikey Manville chose a different path. Success, to him, is not about having his songs played on the radio, although that would be nice. It’s not about filling a stadium with adoring fans, although that would be nice. For Mikey, success is being first and foremost, a good father and husband. That doesn’t diminish his passion for creating catchy, indie rock with meaningful lyrics.

In Part I, Montreal Rocks speaks with Mikey Manville about the birth of the Manvils, the Shakespearean origins of the band name, the events that sparked the new LP, the Mikey legacy, the perils of touring and the importance of family.

Part II is a track by track in-depth look at the new album Reaction Arrow and the meaning behind the songs.
