In the wake of devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles, a remarkable musical initiative has emerged from the independent music community. Good Music, a collective known for its philanthropic endeavours, has orchestrated what might be their most ambitious project yet: a 90-track benefit compilation featuring an impressive roster of alternative music luminaries.
Set for a 24-hour release window this Friday on Bandcamp, “Good Music to Lift Up Los Angeles” arrives at a crucial moment. The compilation brings together an eclectic mix of artists, from indie stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie and R.E.M. to contemporary voices like Courtney Barnett and Perfume Genius, offering previously unreleased material that spans the spectrum of independent music.
The urgency of the situation is reflected in the compilation’s swift assembly. “We only had a few weeks to put this together,” explains Jordan Kurland, Good Music co-founder and veteran artist manager. “The response from artists has been nothing short of remarkable.”
The project carries particular resonance for several contributing artists, including members of Dawes, who lost their homes in the Eaton Fire. Similarly, cover artist Cleon Peterson, based in Altadena, saw both his home and studio destroyed by the same blaze.

This isn’t Good Music’s first foray into crisis response. The collective has previously raised substantial funds for various causes, including over $600,000 for voter participation initiatives in 2020. Their track record suggests an understanding of music’s capacity to catalyse community support during critical moments.
The compilation, priced at $20.25, will direct proceeds to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund and the LA Food Bank. Bandcamp has additionally pledged its revenue share to MusiCares, creating a multi-pronged approach to relief efforts.
As Los Angeles grapples with the aftermath of these fires, this musical response represents more than just fundraising – it’s a testament to the indie music community’s ability to mobilise rapidly in times of crisis, turning artistic expression into tangible support for those affected by disaster.
