IAM emerged in 1989 but traces its origins back a few years earlier to the mid-’80s under names like Lively Crew and B-Boys Stance, eventually becoming IAM when joined by Shurik’n, Imhotep, Kephren, and others. Their third studio album, L’École du micro d’argent, released in March 1997, marked a high-water mark—certified diamond in France and selling well over 1.5 million copies, becoming the best-selling French hip-hop album ever.

IAM’s music frequently interweaves ancient Egyptian motifs, Asian and African mythologies, and sharp, socially conscious lyricism. Their name itself, variously interpreted as Invasion Arrivée de Mars (a nod to their home, Marseille) or Imperial Asiatic Men, encapsulates this layered identity.

While this Montréal show may seem like just another date on a tour, its significance lies deeper. Montréal has long been fertile ground for hip-hop, and IAM’s arrival feels more like a reunion than a gig.
