Hanorah + Makenzie @ Le Verre Bouteille (Taverne Tour)

This year, I decided to check out Taverne Tour for the first time. I love seeing bands perform in small venues and there’s always such a great variety of music. What I don’t love is overcrowded spaces with no seating, but somehow I made it through two nights out of three.

On Thursday night Makenzie and Hanorah performed beautiful and intimate sets at Le Verre Bouteille.

I’d never heard of Makenzie before and was pleasantly surprised by her beautiful vocals and sweet folksy sound. She sang in French except for one song (Bluebird). I really enjoyed the delicate feminine harmonies of her band, but don’t be fooled, sometimes the strongest words come from the softest voices. Enfer America was my favourite.

I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve seen Hanorah more times than I can remember. And it is truly wonderful to watch her artistry develop so beautifully in the past six years. Dressed in her signature red and emanating a genuine warmth, Hanorah’s glow lit up the dark and cramped bar. She wished everyone a happy Valentines and offered to take selfies with anyone wearing red.

I really enjoyed Matty and Time Waits For No Woman. The highlight of the evening was during Glory Box (Portishead) when guitarist Max broke a string and Hanorah had to improvise while playing bass. She began to freestyle some funny lyrics which made it a magically spontaneous moment that I’ll never forget.

Before ending her set with the heartwarming Heavenly One she told us about her long and challenging journey in becoming a singer/songwriter and expressed a deep sense of gratitude to all the artists who taught her so much and brought her to this point. And as a personal witness to this remarkable evolution I couldn’t help but share in her joy.
