Gia Margaret announced Singing, her first vocal album in six years, arriving April 24 via Jagjaguwar. The Chicago artist released the single “Everyone Around Me Dancing” today alongside a North American and European tour that runs May through September. Margaret stopped singing in 2018 after a vocal injury forced her to shift to instrumental work, releasing ambient albums Mia Gargaret in 2020 and Romantic Piano in 2023.
Singing was recorded across London, Eau Claire, and Chicago with contributions from Kurt Vile, David Bazan, Bon Iver’s Sean Carey, Stars’ Amy Millan, the Weepies’ Deb Talan, and Frou Frou’s Guy Sigsworth. Margaret addressed the hiatus directly in a statement. “There was a time when I really didn’t know if I would sing again. So once I healed, there was a lot of internal pressure to come back strong. I didn’t know who I was anymore. So it felt like beginning again, and reconnecting with these very old, old parts of myself.”
The new single continues themes of isolation Margaret explored during her instrumental period. She described it as “a reflection on feeling isolated and the comfort found in that isolation. It is for taking a pause, for being in observation of a very scary and loud world and it is for finding stillness in our own inner worlds too.”

The tour kicks off May 1 in New York at Stone Circle Theatre and includes stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Nashville, and a hometown show at Chicago’s Thalia Hall on May 12. The run continues through the West Coast in June, hitting Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Fe before a European leg in September with dates in Glasgow, Manchester, London, Utrecht, Paris, and Berlin.
Despite Amy Millan’s involvement on the record, no Montreal date has been announced. Millan, a longtime member of Montreal’s Stars, contributed vocals to the album alongside the other guest performers. The 12-track Singing marks Margaret’s return to the vocal work that defined her 2018 debut There’s Always Glimmer.
