In the FME choose your musical adventure, Friday was a difficult one. Obviously went to bed way too late, but was fully rested by the time the 5 à 7 choice had to be made.
Peter Dreams
Being a July Talk fan, it was an easy choice to pick Peter Dreams, the project of Peter Dreimanis. Read the review of this gig along with some insight into how this project differs from July Talk
My pick for a show I would pay $100 to catch in Montreal is definitely Peter Dreams. That was amazing.
Nyssa
Having just an appetizer of time with Nyssa, I can see why Peter Dreimanis wanted to make sure to catch the set.
Big 90s vibe with Siouxsie Sioux finishing touches. Peter shared that Nyssa is a big part of the Toronto music scene so maybe someone to investigate.
Mossaï Mossaï
Mossaï Mossaï is a band that will haunt you long after catching their performance.
All the way from France, the band created a vibe that resembled if Dead Can Dance did a Sonic Youth infused Cirque du Soleil musical.
At times lullaby-like, with poetic recital of lyrics, to hard noise, back to atmospheric. Somehow, it just works to perfection.
I will definitely catch them again, if they are anywhere close.
Alix Fernz
Alix would fit right in CBGB with the right mix of punk energy and panache. Often with his tongue hanging out, Alix would energize the crowd, who loved every minute of the performance.
I’ve witnessed countless live performances, but I’ve never seen someone play the bass as Vincent Paul did. He shared the next day that guitar is his instrument, so he plays bass like a guitar. It was insane.
When Alix is not eating his microphone, playing keys & guitar, he is contorting on stage, and even takes time to sing in the audience, encouraging the mosh pit.
Alix Fernz is another performer to watch out for and see live. You can also catch him bartending at L’Escogriffe.
Galaxie
As I was about to leave, I got sucked into the black hole that is Galaxie. This Galixie was formed in 2002 by Olivier Langevin and Fred Fortin, with a mixture of other members.
At times Queens of the Stone Age, at times soulful, the band had the crowd in their gravitational pull. The years of experience made them a tight band along with new fans added this evening.
Lemongrab
Gaëlle Cordeau looks like if Sinéad O’Connor was part of the Sex Pistols. In real life, a sweet and quiet person, but onstage, Nothing Compares 2 U!
The band is partly from Montreal, but established in Berlin, inspired by the city that gave us the Berlin Trilogy.
They grab you by the lemons and don’t let go till their set is done. Even Alix Fernz and members of TVOD could not miss this one.
A powerhouse of a set that was the perfect ending to the night.
Dope.gng
Just one more, I said, as I went down the stairs of le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda to catch some of Dope.gng.
The crowd was into it, but by this hour, I was simply too exhausted by all the punk energy I exerted.
Conclusion
Friday was my favorite day where I got my fix of Punk and Post-Punk music, along with the incredible performance and conversation with Peter Dreams. And to think…we are only halfway done.
