FIKA(S), the Festival of Scandinavian and Nordic Culture and Art, has unveiled its lineup for the eagerly anticipated 5th edition, set to take place from March 9 to 15, 2024. Boasting over twenty diverse activities spread throughout the week, the festival continues to draw crowds, having already welcomed nearly 45,000 attendees since its inception in 2016.
The name FIKA(S), derived from the Swedish term “fika” representing a casual coffee break, encapsulates the laid-back ambiance of the festival. Embracing this ethos, snacks will be provided at each event, honoring the Swedish tradition and fostering an informal and communal atmosphere.
This year, FIKA(S) makes its debut at the Monument-National, situated in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles. Among the highlights is the Maison Hygge, an inclusive space open to all from March 9 to 10. Offering an array of complimentary activities suitable for both children and adults, the program includes storytelling sessions, yoga sessions, discussions on the role of women in Viking society, and an artisan market.

In the realm of music, FIKA(S) showcases an eclectic lineup featuring local artists with Scandinavian roots or influenced by Nordic culture. The musical journey commences with the “Reprises Nordiques” evening on March 8, headlined by Frannie Holder, followed by her solo performance. On March 12, Erika Angell of Thus Owls fame will unveil her inaugural solo album, preceding an international collaboration between Moe Clark and Marthe Halvorsen on March 14. The festival culminates on March 15 with the North American debut of JJ Paulo, a Danish artist of Tanzanian descent, at Ausgang Plaza.
Film enthusiasts can indulge in a retrospective of renowned Icelandic filmmaker Rúnar Rúnarsson at the Cinémathèque Québécoise from March 11 to 13. Literary aficionados, meanwhile, have the opportunity to engage with Danish author Anne-Cathrine Bomann during two insightful sessions on March 12 and 13, where she will present her latest work, “En dehors de la gamme” (published by La Peuplade), following the immense success of her debut novel, “Agathe.”
Committed to inclusivity, FIKA(S) endeavours to ensure accessibility to its events through scaled pricing and a multitude of free or pay-what-you-can activities.
