Cevilain + The Space Between + The New Hires @ Saw Club, Ottawa

Cevilain graced the local Ottawa rock and metal scene with their performance at Saw Club on April 8th. Kicking off their first performance of the year with a sold-out show made it an unforgettable experience. Formed in the nation’s capital in 2018, the alternative metal boy band delivered an incredible performance in their all-white attire. Each member had a unique presence on stage, from Menzies’ powerful vocals to Joel Lefebvre’s impressive lead guitar skills, Eddy Fox’s skilled bass playing, and Andrew Parmelee’s energetic drumming. They showcased songs from their most recent concept EP, delving into the themes of grief and loss, with each track embodying a different stage of grief.

The opening acts, The New Hires and The Space Between gave outstanding performances and raised the bar for the city’s rock scene. The New Hires, a local indie rock band formed in 2022 during the pandemic, captured the audience’s attention while dressed in their formal suits. What stood out was the incredible energy of their drummer, Christian, and Max’s powerful screamo vocals. The band interacted energetically with the audience, and the lead singer was occasionally spotted performing amidst the crowd.

The Space Between delivered a captivating performance for their first show of the year, blending original tracks with covers and even offering a sneak peek at an upcoming project. Vocalist Maryn Pegan elevated the atmosphere with her vibrant stage presence and dance moves. Cevilain’s intense guitar solos further amplified the night’s energy, as did the drummer’s vigorous performance, Andrew Parmelee, who was shirtless and covered in black body paint. The audience was completely immersed, participating in sing-alongs, moshing, headbanging, and crowd-surfing a fan in a wheelchair.

The crowd’s enthusiasm was evident, and they eagerly requested an encore at the end of the performance. Cevilain happily obliged, delivering one final song before concluding the event. Additionally, merchandise was on sale at the venue, providing fans with the opportunity to meet the band members and express their support.
