Boundary-Breaking Artist Nadah El Shazly Returns with ‘Laini Tani’

Nadah El Shazly, the Montreal-based, Egyptian-born, producer, vocalist, composer, and actor, has announced  her second album, ‘Laini Tani’, set for release on June 6th via Backward Music. The announcement comes alongside the unveiling of “Ghorzetein,” a brooding composition that serves as the album’s closing statement.

El Shazly, who garnered attention with her 2017 debut ‘Ahwar’, continues to traverse the intersection of traditional Arabic music and contemporary electronic experimentation. Her latest work emerges from a period of intensive collaboration with producer 3Phaz and harpist Sarah Pagé, resulting in a collection that weaves classical Egyptian improvisation with modern sound design.

“Ghorzetein” (meaning “Two Stitches” in English) demonstrates El Shazly’s evolving sonic palette. The track builds from a sparse beginning into a textured arrangement of percussion and processed vocals, reflecting its thematic exploration of repeated heartbreak through its gradual intensification.

The path to ‘Laini Tani’ follows El Shazly’s recent work in film composition, including her award-winning score for ‘Les Damnés ne pleurent pas’ (The Damned Don’t Cry), which earned her recognition at both the Bordeaux International Independent Film Festival and Dublin International Film Festival. She has also composed for Mahmoud Sabbagh’s ‘Last Party in R. Desert!’ and Mahdi Fleifel’s ‘To a Land Unknown’.

El Shazly’s musical trajectory began in Cairo’s underground scene, where she performed in Sick Gdrch, a Misfits cover band, before transitioning to electronic music and composition. Her work has since found her collaborating with notable experimental musicians including Sam Shalabi and Maurice Louca, while performing at festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Rewire, and Roskilde.

‘Laini Tani’ will be released through Backward Music in Canada and One Little Independent Records for the rest of the world, marking a new chapter in El Shazly’s ongoing exploration of cross-cultural sound.
