Body Type Announce Third Album Tally, Share New Single “Mulberry”

Body Type have announced their third album, Tally, due July 24 via p(doom) Records, the label run by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. It was recorded at Velveteen Laboratory Studios in Los Angeles with producer Stella Mozgawa, whose recent credits include work with Courtney Barnett and Kim Gordon.

The Sydney four-piece — Sophie McComish and Annabel Blackman on vocals and guitar, Cecil Coleman on drums, and Georgia Wilkinson-Derums on vocals and bass — are marking ten years as a band with this one. Where Expired Candy, their 2023 record, came out swinging on post-pandemic energy, Tally takes its time. The band describes it as quieter in ambition, more considered in craft.

The first single is “Mulberry,” out now. It moves slowly and a little sideways, with Wilkinson-Derums’ lyrics free-associating around the colour purple, pulling in Prince, bruises, veins, the sky. The line that sticks: “Tuning the absurd in my day to day / Bound to the asphalt in every way.” It’s a good indication of where the record sits: dreamy, grounded, not in any rush to prove itself.

The album combines post-punk, jagged guitar rock, and traces of ’60s pop. The press materials call it their most expansive record to date, and the Mozgawa production credit alone suggests something more polished than what came before, without losing the edges.

Body Type head to the UK and Europe this fall supporting Courtney Barnett.

Tally is out July 24. Pre-order and stream “Mulberry” here.
