Boards of Canada Announce First Album in 13 Years

Boards of Canada announced Inferno on April 22nd. It’s their first album since Tomorrow’s Harvest in 2013, and it comes out May 29 via Warp Records.

The record runs 18 tracks. Physical editions include limited red translucent double vinyl, standard black double vinyl, and CD, each with a 16-page booklet. Digital is available too.

The announcement closed out a monthlong campaign that nobody quite saw coming. VHS tapes arrived unannounced at fans’ homes, filled with static and documentary footage. Posters went up in cities. Then on April 16th, brothers Mike Sandison and Marcus Eoin uploaded “Tape 05” to YouTube, three minutes of new music, their first since 2013. Reddit users have since matched the runtime to Father and Son, listed fifth on the album.

The tracklist doesn’t reveal much, which is consistent with the brand. Prophecy At 1420 MHz, Memory Death, Blood In The Labyrinth, I Saw Through Platonia. No interviews. No explanations. Sandison and Eoin have never felt any obligation to narrate what they do, and thirteen years of silence hasn’t changed that.

Inferno is available to pre-order at boardsofcanada.com.
