Last Saturday, Newspeak hosted a solid night for fans of modern pop-punk. Even though the room wasn’t completely packed, the crowd that showed up was clearly in the mood for a good time.
Local bands Suckerpunch! and Second Harbour got things started and warmed up the room before Ontario’s Rarity took the stage. Montreal marked the final stop of a short three-show run for Rarity alongside Bearings, following dates in Toronto and Ottawa. The band delivered a set that balanced heavy moments with melodic hooks. A few people tried to get a mosh pit going, but the crowd seemed a bit more reserved. Currently performing as a four-piece, the band had some extra support on stage from Arm’s Length’s Jeremy Whyte, who joined them on guitar for this run of shows.

Closing the night was Bearings, making their first appearance in Montreal since 2019. The band recently announced they’ll be part of the Vans Warped Tour 2026, and their set showed exactly why they remain a strong name in today’s pop-punk scene.
From the start, the crowd was fully engaged, turning several songs into big singalongs. Tracks like Sway and Eyes Closed got one of the loudest reactions of the night, while newer material from the recently released album Comfort Company, including the single Quick Release, translated really well live. A strong return to the city and a reminder that Montreal’s pop-punk crowd is always ready to sing along.
