Basia Bulat is set to release her new album Basia’s Palace on February 21, 2025, via Secret City Records. The Montreal-based singer-songwriter has also dropped the lead single, “Baby,” along with a minimalist, one-take music video directed by Nora Rosenthal. The song, featuring lush string arrangements by Drew Jurecka, offers a reflective yet danceable rhythm.

In a statement, Bulat explained that “Baby” had been in the works for years. “I wrote this song many years ago but never could get the lyrics and performance quite right,” she shared. “I wanted to try it again after becoming a parent. It’s about how we can’t control how or when we’re going to evolve, even when we desperately want to.” Parenthood gave her a fresh perspective on the song, and she finally felt it had clicked when her daughter kept asking to hear it again.

The new album, co-produced by Mark Lawson and mixed by Tucker Martine, marks Bulat’s first full-length project since 2022’s The Garden. The record is said to explore themes of memory, love, and the complexities of life, with a focus on late-night introspection. Inspired by her own experiences balancing family life and creativity, Bulat took a page from Leonard Cohen’s playbook, writing during the quiet hours before dawn.

Recorded in her home studio, Basia’s Palace is described as a blend of nostalgia and innovation, incorporating both electronic elements and organic sounds. The album reportedly draws from her Polish heritage and the objects and memories that shaped her, offering listeners a mix of folk, synth-pop, and cinematic strings.

Bulat will hit the road in early 2025, stopping at Montreal’s Fairmount Theatre on March 14.
