Grammy-nominated and RIAA-certified artist Bas has taken an unconventional approach to music video production with his latest release for the song “Decent,” featuring Amaarae. This project is part of his new album, “We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up,” which has been circulating in the music world since its release last month.
Directed by Danaé Gosset, the video for “Decent” is the first of a series where Bas has entrusted the visual aspect of his music to various creators. Gosset’s interpretation of the song is a departure from traditional music videos, employing a narrative animation style to depict the complexities of a relationship, a move that aligns with Bas’s artistic ethos.
The inspiration for the video is rooted in performance art, drawing from the works of Marina Abramovich, Yoann Bourgeois, and Yoko Ono. The visual landscape, influenced by James Turrell, Olafur Eliason, and Dan Flavin, adds an additional layer of depth to the video. The production process was notably intricate, involving 3D creation, followed by a manual process of printing, illustrating, and scanning each frame.

Bas’s fourth studio album is reflective of his global travels, covering five continents since 2022. This diverse exposure is evident in the album’s blend of Afrobeats, NYC hip-hop, Dance, R&B, among other genres. The album includes contributions from a variety of international artists such as J. Cole, AJ Tracey, FKJ, A$AP FERG, Adekunle Gold, Blxckie, and Sha Sha, alongside production from Boi1da, Coleman, T-Minus, J Lloyd (Jungle), Lydia Kitto, and Kel-P.

The album delves into societal behaviours, particularly how sensitive topics are often only broached under the influence of substances, a theme evident in tracks like “Ho Chi Minh.” Simultaneously, it comments on society’s general apathy towards significant issues until they escalate to critical points, as reflected in songs like “Khartoum” and “Decent.”
Bas’s latest venture represents a shift in the conventional approach to music and visual art integration. By combining music, art, and narrative storytelling, his work not only demonstrates his own artistic growth but also challenges the norms of the music industry.
