Babehoven + Greg Mendez @ La Sotterenea

GREG MENDEZ

Philly-based singer/songwriter Greg Mendez took the stage quietly, unnoticed by the bustling crowd at La Sotterenea. He sat down alone on a wooden chair in the middle of the stage, head bent down, and began to soundcheck his guitar—or so I thought. He softly plucked away at the strings as the crowd continued to converse. Soon enough, we realized that his set had actually started, and as soon as everyone quieted down, he began to sing.

Greg cites artists such as Elliot Smith as inspiration; his music is extremely low-key but emotionally heavy-hitting. What struck me right off the bat was how much his voice sounded like Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie. If he covered “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” I don’t think I’d be able to tell the difference from the real thing with my eyes closed.

The entire half-hour set was comprised of solo acoustic guitar tracks with the exception of a few where a friend added some droning synths for ambience. What I appreciated the most was how respectful the audience was. Throughout all the music, not even a whisper could be heard. All attention was on Greg and the outpouring of his heart.

If you’re in the mood to get in your feels and shed some tears late at night, this artist’s songs are the perfect soundtrack.

BABEHOVEN

I was first introduced to Babehoven last year, seeing them open for Slow Pulp. Their brand of indie rock/folk isn’t usually what I gravitate to, but seeing it live was so captivating. After that first time, I was just left wanting more, so when I saw an intimate Montreal show announced, I knew I had to be there.

Usually, I’ll have my phone handy to take notes during any concert I’m reviewing, but during this entire performance, I only jotted a couple of lines down. I was so enthralled by the sounds I was hearing that I couldn’t take my eyes off the performance. The combination of Maya Bon’s passionate songwriting, her ethereal vocals, and Ryan Albert’s tasteful guitar work was extremely captivating.

The band’s harmonies were another standout for me, specifically on songs like “I’m on Your Team.” The climax of this song was easily the highlight of the night for me, almost moving me to tears. Maya’s vocal performance is immaculate and moving.

The setlist was mainly comprised of cuts from their new album, “Water’s  Here In You.” It’s an amazing addition to their catalogue and one that I’ll often return to throughout the year. The penultimate song of their set, “Ella’s From Somewhere Else,” was a heartwarming moment that ended with beautiful-sounding harmonies from all five band members.

They closed their 13-song set with “Dizzy Spin,” an upbeat tune where the drummer had his moment to shine with complex beats. During this song the band was the loudest, giving their all to their last moments.

Babehoven’s show absolutely flew by. My only disappointment was the length of the set; I would’ve absolutely been down for more music! Once again, I’m left craving more and will surely catch this band any time I’m able to!
