Allison Russell and Annie Lennox Join Forces

In a collaboration that bridges generations of musical activism, GRAMMY winner Allison Russell has released “Superlover” featuring Annie Lennox. The track arrives with a Mason Poole-directed video and production from DimStar, with backing from Wendy & Lisa and Russell’s Rainbow Coalition band.

The pairing isn’t entirely unexpected. The two first connected when invited by Brandi Carlile to perform alongside Joni Mitchell, an encounter Lennox describes as immediately significant. “I knew right away that she was a very special person,” Lennox notes. “We share a similar world-view in terms of perspectives on injustice and our passionate love for music.”

Both artists frame the song as a statement of purpose during polarized times. Russell calls it “a prayer” and “a protection spell,” while Lennox describes it as “medicine for the times and balm for the soul” amid global “dissonance, polarization, aggressivity and hatred.”

The single drops as Russell completes her Broadway stint in “Hadestown,” where she took over the role of Persephone last November. Her profile has risen considerably following extensive touring with Hozier throughout 2024, which included her first Billboard Hot 100 appearance via their duet “Wildflower & Barley.”

Russell’s upcoming “All Returners Tour” begins April 30th in Vermont after a brief Australian run earlier that month. The North American dates conclude May 28th at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, with Kara Jackson supporting all shows.

True to form, Russell has integrated activism into the tour through a partnership with Propeller supporting the Human Rights Campaign. This continues her pattern of using her platform for advocacy, following her curation of Newport Folk Festival’s “Once And Future Sounds: Roots and Revolution” and organizing Nashville’s “Love Rising” benefit, which raised over $550,000 for LGBTQIA+ causes.

Russell’s critical acclaim continues to mount, with recent recognition including Billboard Women In Music Canada’s “Breakthrough Artist” award, multiple GRAMMY nominations, an Americana Award win, and her first JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album.

Beyond music, Russell has secured a book deal for a memoir based on her life and the material that inspired her albums “Outside Child” and “The Returner.”
