Skeletal Remains, Californian purveyors of pulverizing death metal, return with “Fragments of the Ageless.” While the album undoubtedly delivers the genre’s signature sonic brutality, it doesn’t quite reach the groundbreaking heights some may be expecting.
The opening salvo, “Relentless Appetite,” is a masterclass in unrestrained aggression. Guttural vocals and pummelling riffs pummel the listener, showcasing the band’s technical proficiency and sheer power. Tracks like “To Conquer the Devout” showcase Skeletal Remains’ ability to weave intricate compositions, but occasionally these veer towards convoluted.
Production by Dan Swanö ensures sonic clarity, capturing the raw intensity of the band while allowing each instrument to breathe. However, the polished sheen might leave some yearning for the dirtier, more organic production of classic death metal.
The band’s willingness to experiment is commendable. Tracks like “Verminous Embodiment” incorporate thrash and black metal elements, adding a textural complexity. True, the blending feels somewhat forced at times, and these excursions occasionally deviate from the band’s core strengths.
Individually, the musicians are undeniably skilled. The guitar duo of De La O and Monroy delivers a relentless barrage of riffs and solos, while drummer Pierce Williams provides a pulverizing foundation. New bassist Brian Rush integrates seamlessly, solidifying the low end.
Ultimately, “Fragments of the Ageless” is a solid slab of modern death metal. It showcases the band’s technical prowess and willingness to experiment but doesn’t quite reach the level of innovation that might elevate it to classic status. Fans of the genre will find much to enjoy, but others may find its familiarity and occasional missteps slightly underwhelming.
