Album review: Defying – Wadera

COVER ARTWORK

Conjuring a sonic tapestry woven with threads of darkness and intrigue, Polish post-metal band DEFYING delves deep into the realms of atmospheric metal, crafting an album that both captivates and unsettles in equal measure.

Drawing inspiration from the obscure corners of Polish horror cinema and literature, “Wadera” is a concept album steeped in the traditions of dark romanticism. Much like the haunting narratives of classic tales and films such as “The Castle of Otranto” and “Nosferatu,” Defying’s music beckons listeners into a world where the line between reality and nightmare blurs with each haunting melody.

From the moment the first notes of “Tempus Infaustum” reverberate through the speakers, it’s clear that Defying has meticulously curated a unique auditory experience. They blend elements of post- and progressive metal with hints of sludge and black metal, creating a sonic landscape that is as vast and foreboding as the darkest of forests.

But it’s not just the sheer intensity of the music that sets Defying apart; it’s the attention to detail that truly elevates “Wadera” to new heights. Recorded and produced using traditional equipment and microphones, the album exudes a vintage charm that harkens back to a bygone era. With the inclusion of century-old instruments such as the zither and hunting horn, the band succeeds in transporting listeners to a time long forgotten.

Defying demonstrates a keen understanding of dynamics throughout the album, effortlessly shifting between moments of crushing heaviness and delicate introspection. From the thunderous crash of guitar chords to the haunting wail of the vocals, each element of “Wadera” is meticulously crafted to evoke a myriad of emotions.

Indeed, the subtle nuances and intricate textures truly make “Wadera” shine. Whether it’s the immersive drones and eerie soundscapes that lurk beneath the surface or the haunting guitar effects that linger in the air like spectres, Defying leaves no stone unturned in its quest to create a truly immersive listening experience.

This album is a must-listen for fans of bands like Absent in Body, Amenra, and Triptykon, as well as for enthusiasts of Polish music, including Obscure Sphinx, Entropia, and Blindead.
