The essence of Cantique Lépreux‘s latest offering, “Le bannissement,” lies in a tumult of tremolo-picked melodies and tortured screams. The Québec City-based quartet returns with their third full-length album, a tale of self-initiation, societal rejection, and a glorification of nature woven into the fabric of their signature style. As the album unfolds, it becomes a sonic odyssey, dragging listeners through desolate landscapes and impassable mountains while carrying the weight of cosmic torment.
The undeterred momentum and clear direction of opener “Le ravissement” set the stage for what’s to come—a relentless cascade of melodic black metal fury. With the addition of a second guitarist, Ascèse, to the lineup, the band’s sound is enriched with layers of harmonization, adding depth and complexity to its already formidable sonic palette.
Throughout “Le bannissement,” Cantique Lépreux demonstrates a mastery of their craft, effortlessly blending elements of traditional black metal with more modern influences. The result is a sound that feels both familiar and innovative, paying homage to the genre’s roots while pushing its boundaries forward. Tracks like “Fuir” and the epic “Rivières rompues” showcase the band’s ability to balance aggression with melody, creating a listening experience that is as exhilarating as it is cathartic.
However, for all its strengths, “Le bannissement” is not without its flaws. The album’s second half, while still compelling, lacks the same sense of urgency and momentum found in its predecessor. As the tempo slows and the intensity wanes, the album struggles to maintain the same level of engagement, leaving listeners longing for a more satisfying conclusion.
Despite these shortcomings, “Le bannissement” stands as a testament to Cantique Lépreux’s talent and ambition. With this album, they have crafted a work of art that is both challenging and rewarding, pushing the boundaries of the black metal genre while staying true to its core principles. While it may not reach the same heights as some of their peers, it is nonetheless a remarkable achievement—a testament to the band’s dedication and creativity.
