Just as springtime starts painting North American landscapes in hues of gentle greens and thawing blues, Australian black metal outfit Austere plunges us headfirst into a realm of frosted brilliance with their new offering, “Beneath the Threshold.” Austere weave a tapestry of icy riffs, melancholic melodies, and unsettling atmosphere that’s as captivating as it is bone-chilling.
Imagine yourself traversing a desolate, snow-swept expanse, the wind whipping at your face, the only sounds the crunch of snow beneath your boots and the desolate cries of unseen creatures. That’s the kind of vivid imagery Austere conjures with tracks like “Thrall.” The guitars shimmer and sting like shards of ice, the drums pound like an avalanche in slow motion, and the vocals – a chilling mix of shrieks and clean singing – paint a picture of existential dread that’s strangely beautiful.
But “Beneath the Threshold” isn’t all relentless bleakness. There are moments of surprising beauty, like the sun peeking through a crack in the storm clouds. The aptly titled “The Sunset of Life” explodes with heat-generating leads and crashing waves of melody, punctuated by vocalist Sorrow’s (aka Tim Yatras) soaring clean vocals. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the coldest depths of despair, a flicker of hope can still exist.
The album is packed with standout moments. “Cold Cerecloth” is a particular highlight, with its infectious bass riff burrowing into your brain like a particularly enthusiastic earworm. The interplay between the searing guitars, hammering drums, and Yatras’ impassioned vocals is nothing short of epic.
Austere’s evolution since their return from a 13-year hiatus is impressive. Their 2023 release, “Corrosion of Hearts,” hinted at a more mature sound, but “Beneath the Threshold” fully embraces it. Their black metal roots are still firmly in place, but they’ve seamlessly blended them with atmospheric blackgaze elements, creating a sound that’s both hauntingly beautiful and punishingly harsh.
Austere have emerged from their hiatus stronger, more creative, and hungrier than ever. “Beneath the Threshold” is a triumphant return, a masterclass in atmospheric black metal that will leave you shivering with delight.
