mokina was born in Montreal and now lives on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. “fool,” released today, is the first single from her debut album Jardim Celeste.
The song takes its name from the Fool card in the tarot, the one that stands for beginnings, innocence and the step taken before you can see where it lands. She wrote it about the start of a relationship. “Sometimes the bravest thing is simply to begin,” she says.
She made it with Jeremy Lachance, who has produced most of her catalogue. The arrangement is built from layered guitars, soft synth textures, lo-fi drums and stacked vocal harmonies, leaning on atmosphere and repetition rather than movement. mokina says the demo nearly did not survive the record: “The demo of this song was, in my opinion, one of the least convincing of the record and somehow it is coming out as the single. I’m so grateful to be able to work with a team of creatives who bring my ideas to life, both sonically and visually.”
She has been releasing music independently since 2018, and last year’s five-track EP mirage picked up support from Under The Radar, The Line of Best Fit, tmrw, COLORS and Ones To Watch. Jardim Celeste is the first full-length. Its reference points run from Faye Webster and Kate Bollinger to boygenius and Alice Phoebe Lou.
A video for “fool” accompanies the release. No album release date or Montreal dates have been announced.
