Shaina Hayes has announced her third album, Take the Case of a Rose, out November 13 on Bonsound. It arrives with “Tempest”, the record’s third single after “Flourish” and “Timid”, and it is available to pre-order now on LP, CD and digital.
The album runs to ten songs. Physical copies add three more in a suite titled SANCTUM, sequenced as a separate movement that extends the record’s themes.
Hayes will bring the songs to Quebec stages in spring 2027 across eleven dates, opening in Sherbrooke on March 11 and reaching Montreal for a launch show at the Fairmount Theatre on April 22. The run also takes in Quebec City, Gatineau, Lévis, Saint-Hyacinthe, Drummondville and Frelighsburg, closing at Garage à Simon in Lavaltrie in October.
“Tempest” builds slowly through interlocking acoustic guitars and loose percussion, written around the sensation of anxiety gathering before it breaks. It was produced with Francis Ledoux on drums and David Marchand on guitar, bass and pedal steel, both longtime collaborators. The wider album adds upright piano and strings, with contributions from Brad Barr, Cédric Dind-Lavoie, Lysandre Ménard and Arielle Soucy.
The record was written through a period of personal change and draws on the rhythms of rural life, which is not an abstraction in her case: Hayes still runs a vegetable farm in the small town where she grew up, and has done throughout her music career.
Her 2024 album Kindergarten Heart drew coverage from Consequence, KCRW, The Line of Best Fit and BBC Radio 6 Music, and landed on year-end lists at Le Devoir, Radio-Canada, CISM and DOMINIONATED. She has previously opened for The War on Drugs, The Barr Brothers and Elisapie.
