Leith Ross + Wyatt C. Louis @ Studio TD

My absolute favourite moment when shooting shows (other than catching THE SHOT) is discovering a new artist to fill my monthly playlists with. At the end of the day, I am a music enjoyer! Wyatt C. Louis was exactly that for me on the evening of May 2nd. After grabbing a few beers at a loud (but fun) bar with some of the Montreal Rocks team, Wyatt’s gentle voice was the perfect way to slow down my night. The silence in the room was palpable, it was the perfect setting for Wyatt to fill the room with their melodic tone and profound story. They spoke about being a two-spirit musician and how their identity and experience as a trans Indigenous individual spills into their songwriting. As a queer person, I could tell that their words deeply touched many crowd members, who swayed along to the tunes.

With a gracious end to Wyatt’s set came the lighthearted beginning to Leith Ross’ set. They have a funny way of being fun and silly before singing the most devastating thing you’ve ever heard. And exactly that they did! They said hello to Montreal before explaining that they accidentally choked on bubbly before getting on stage to celebrate the last show of the tour, then metaphorically slapped the audience in the face with “Point Of View” off their new album I Can See The Future.

And that was just the start of a very beautifully emotional set. They then continued with songs like “What My Love Is For” and “Terrified”, and chatted with the crowd between songs. One thing I appreciated about them is that they kept checking in with the audience, making sure we weren’t too heartbroken and devastated lol. Thankfully, most of us made it to the end without collapsing. Well, all but one, who did actually pass out during the set. Hope you’re feeling better, girl!

Ross continued with “Id Have To Think About It” and “I Will”. Their set really honed in on songs from their new album, which focus heavily on grief, love, intimacy, queerness, and growth. All topics that Ross is not new to! They have made their mark by writing songs that draw heavy and melancholic, yet beautiful emotions from the listeners.

They finally finished the set and tour with “(I Can See) The Future”, “(You) On My Arm”, and fan favourite “We’ll Never Have Sex”. Before a tearful goodbye, they shared a final sweet moment with their fans, thanking them for continuing to listen and relate to the music they write. And with that, the I Can See The Future tour came to an end in Montreal’s Studio TD. We were honoured to be the final (therefore, self-appointed most important) stop on tour, and we are so excited to see what Leith Ross has for us next!
