There’s a moment most people recognize but few can name: the instant you realize the version of yourself you’ve been living isn’t quite yours. Ottawa rock act CEVILAIN have built a song around exactly that moment, and they’re calling it “o’dear.”
The new single from the band — who’ve carved out a reputation as Ottawa’s most theatrical and emotionally committed rock act since forming in 2019 — leans into that feeling of identity unraveling with the kind of heavy, almost desperate energy that’s become their calling card. Equal parts Active Rock, Alternative Metal, and Post-Hardcore, the track asks a simple but loaded question: will you be defined, or will you define yourself?
It’s a question CEVILAIN seem well-equipped to pose. They’ve toured Canada and the United States alongside Finger Eleven, Adam Gontier, Danko Jones, and Crown Lands, and have built a catalog of concept-driven releases — including On Death & Dying and VII // Sins — that treat each project as a fully realized experience rather than a collection of tracks. “o’dear” follows that same blueprint: introspective at its core, explosive in its delivery.

Montreal gets a look at this new material up close when CEVILAIN headline Rise Up Fest at TurboHaus on May 8. If you’re in Ottawa, they’ll also be opening for Coheed & Cambria at Hard Rock Live on July 14.
For a band who describe themselves as “your favourite alt-metal boyband,” there’s nothing lightweight about what they’re doing. “o’dear” is worth your time.
