It’s New Music Friday, and this week’s batch of releases is one of the most diverse and exciting yet. From homegrown Montreal talent to global heavyweights, there’s something here for every mood and every volume setting.
Let’s start local: Montreal’s own SamWoy just dropped his debut album Even Sad Boys Like to Have Fun, and it’s a vulnerable, genre-blending ride through bedroom pop, lo-fi beats and bittersweet storytelling. It pairs perfectly with fellow Montrealer Amy Millan, whose latest solo work offers her signature warmth and introspective charm—fans of Stars will feel right at home.
Beyond the 514, we’ve got a stacked list of artists releasing standout material today. Aesop Rock continues to twist words and beats into cerebral head-nods. Alan Sparhawk (of Low) brings a stripped-down intensity to his collaborative track with Trampled by Turtles. Ben Kweller, Matt Berninger, and kathryn joseph all deliver emotionally rich records perfect for reflective moments.
On the heavier side, vildhjarta and THE HAUNTED unleash brutal, technically jaw-dropping releases that will keep metal fans fed. If you’re craving something bold and theatrical, yeule and Anymna are offering hyperpop chaos and dark beauty in equal measure.
Elsewhere, Garbage sound as fierce as ever, Obongjayar delivers lush, genre-bending grooves, and Swans continue to explore the outer reaches of post-rock. Shura, LOW ISLAND, Mt. Joy, Hope We Have Fun, Rivers of Nihil, and caroline round out the list with fresh takes on indie, alt-pop and progressive sounds.
