Montreal’s Franky Selector is set to deliver his fifth album, “Odeon,” on March 21, marking his first release in three years. The record represents a stylistic evolution for the producer, merging his established ’70s disco-boogie foundations with contemporary electronic elements.
While his previous offering “Shabby Chic” featured consistent, flowing arrangements, “Odeon” takes a more dynamic approach. The new material incorporates jazz influences alongside dance-oriented rhythms, creating what Selector describes as “unpredictable and captivating” sonic landscapes.
Selector’s musical background reflects a fusion of influences—his father introduced him to Afro-Cuban jazz and funk-boogie, while his mother contributed an appreciation for French chanson. This diverse foundation has informed his development as both a multi-instrumentalist and producer.
Throughout his career, Selector has collaborated with Quebec artists, including Stéphane Moraille and James DiSalvio of Bran Van 3000, as well as international acts like The National Parcs.
“Take Me With You,” the album’s lead single, arrives with a music video filmed on the French Riviera and directed by 16Pads. A second single titled “Con Le Mani Senza Paura” is planned for summer release, with Patrick Maltais handling directorial duties.
Instrumentally, “Odeon” employs an eclectic toolkit including accordion, double bass, analog synthesizers, varied percussion, and both classical and electric guitars. The album also features innovative vocal treatments, using the human voice as a textural instrument.
Following the album release, Selector will tour Italy in April, with additional performances scheduled in Switzerland and France. No North American dates have been announced yet.
