Montreal’s APACALDA Explores Dark Themes with Single ‘She’s Not Coming’

Montreal artist APACALDA today releases her new single “She’s Not Coming,” offering a glimpse into her upcoming debut album There’s a Shadow In My Room, and It Isn’t Mine, slated for 2025. The track, co-produced by Mishka Stein (known for his work with Patrick Watson and Teke :: Teke) and Sam Woywitka (Half Moon Run, FHANG), presents a blend of dark psychedelic sounds, gritty guitars, and haunting synths, all crafted to convey a story of inner conflict and despair.

“She’s Not Coming” tackles a difficult narrative—exploring the life of a woman who, despite her religious devotion, chooses to end her life. APACALDA’s lyrics reveal the hidden struggles behind the woman’s composed exterior, touching on themes of suicide and mental health. “I write these songs as an extension of healing,” says APACALDA. “I often feel others’ pain and I want to express it in honour of them.”

The release is accompanied by a stunning music film directed by Montreal filmmaker Maïlis, whose work is known for its visually compelling storytelling. The film, shot in Georgia, near APACALDA’s ancestral home in Romania, mirrors the emotional depth of the track. Funded by The MVP Project, the video will be showcased by Directors Library and Girls in Film.
