Swiss metal band Illumishade is currently on their first North American tour, gracing Ottawa’s Brass Monkey on April 12th after a Montreal show the night before. Their unique blend of melodic and progressive metal brings fresh energy to the genre.

The setlist featured tracks from their latest album, “Another Side of You,” released earlier this year. Lead singer Fabienne Erni captivated the audience, while Jonas Wolf (guitar), Mirjam Skal (synth), Yannick Urbanczik (bass), and Marc Friedrich (drums) provided a tight musical foundation. Illumishade interacted with the crowd, giving shoutouts to their early supporters and keeping things light with their humour. Their performance was truly unforgettable. Erni’s vocals were a standout, effortlessly switching between soaring melodies and powerful metal growls.

The band openly expressed their excitement about their first North American tour. Thanks to the band’s exceptional vocals and melodic instrumentals, the evening offered a captivating experience even for those new to Illumishade.

Visions of Atlantis also delivered an incredible set later that night. Their energetic stage presence and camaraderie were infectious. The pirate-clad band, currently touring North America, invited the audience aboard their imaginary ship for a fantastical journey. The band features French vocalist Clémentine Delauney, alongside Michele Guaitoli (vocals), Thomas Caser (drums), Christian Dousha (guitar), and Herbert Glos (bass). Their active audience engagement had everyone singing along, shouting on cue, jumping, or joining the mosh pit.

Visions of Atlantis treated fans to new songs from their upcoming album, tentatively titled “Armada,” available for pre-order at their merch booth. The grand finale saw the band raise the “Vision of Atlantis” flag before their final song and exit. A surprise birthday shout-out for vocalist Michele Guaitoli, complete with cake and candles, added a heartwarming touch. The guitarists and vocalists interacted with fans throughout, creating a theatrical experience with outfit changes, humour, and audience participation.
I had the chance to visit the merch booth and chat with a friendly guitarist who shared the story behind his unique guitar pick designs. All in all, it was a night of unforgettable live music!
