Donovan Woods unveils introspective new album “Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now”

Prolific Canadian singer-songwriter Donovan Woods returns with his seventh studio album, “Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now,” scheduled for release on July 12th via End Times Music.

Known for his introspective lyrics and poignant storytelling, Woods delves deeper than ever before on this new record. “This album serves as a funeral to the life I was living,” he states, hinting at a period of self-reflection and personal growth.

The album’s title track reflects this theme, exploring themes of honesty and self-acceptance. “It’s about taking the time to stop running, and owning up to mistakes, faults, regrets,” explains Woods. This introspective journey continues across the album’s 12 tracks, as Woods examines the complexities of life, relationships, and personal growth since his critically acclaimed 2020 album, “Without People.”

The lead single, “Rosemary,” co-written with Connor Seidel, offers a glimpse into the album’s raw honesty. The song details the aftermath of a heated text message exchange and grapples with the question of forgiveness and acceptance within relationships.

Woods isn’t afraid to delve into the darker aspects of life. “Focusing on carefree, celebratory feelings has never necessarily appealed to me,” he notes. Instead, he finds inspiration in the intricate details of everyday life and the complexities of human interactions. This focus on the nuanced and relatable is evident in collaborations with fellow singer-songwriters like Lori McKenna, Matt Nathanson, Amy Wadge, Matt Prime, William Prince, and Madi Diaz.
