On a night not many wanted to face the outdoors, I was surprised that there was still a decent crowd brave enough to get into the -40 windchill for the 2023 edition of Metal Winter Bash at Petit Campus.
The first opener was Nailed (first performance, “nailed” it), and they brought a very technical while melodic vibe to the stage.
In stark contrast, Ulfhednar, after them, brought a ton of energy to their growly Norse pagan melodic death metal.
The third act was Last Dance Among Wolves who bounced off the previous band’s energy and the stage but seemed to fall short on their cover of One Step Closer by Linkin Park.
The headliners for the night were the heavily masked Nexus Dei, who performed the entirety of their debut release, “Cantata Nocturna,” as well as Iron Maiden’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.
