Grimes has scrapped all work on her new album after latest song, Go, divided opinion amongst fans.
A collaboration between the 26-year-old and producer Blood Diamonds, Grimes – real name Claire Boucher – recorded the track after originally writing it for Rihanna.
Speaking to The New York Times, Boucher discussed the negativity that has surrounded Go. “It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” she said. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio’.”
The release has been intended to prelude a new Grimes album but Boucher revealed work on a follow up to 2012 Juno-winning album Visions has been scrapped, claiming the songs “sucked, so I threw it out and started again”.
The singer seems happy with the decision, saying, “I’m just making way more music,” but some are wondering if signing to Jay Z’s Roc Nation has added to the pressure to deliver a more radio-friendly sound.
Boucher also spoke about her recent decision not to perform the ice bucket challenge. The singer opted not to take on the stunt because of the California drought and the ALS Association’s record of testing on animals. Instead she donated to The Malala Fund, an organisation that helps girls go to school and raise their voices for the right to education.
“All these people with ALS were like, ‘You’re the worst person ever’. I was crying for days,” she said.
