A new digital archive, Gueuleuses, is raising the roof for female vocalists who push the boundaries of singing. Launched just in time for International Women’s Day, Gueuleuses is a bilingual (French and English) website dedicated to archiving and celebrating women and non-binary singers who use extreme vocal techniques.

Gueuleuses boasts over 1,500 bands across genres and eras, from punk and metal to electro and even folk. The searchable database aims to be a one-stop shop for discovering these often under-recognized artists, spanning careers from decades-long veterans to one-off projects.

The archive is the brainchild of Montreal-based researcher and radio host Jolène Ruest. Fueled by her own artistic curiosity and a desire to find role models during her metal singing lessons, Ruest began compiling this list years ago.

“The more I found,” Ruest says, “the more I realized that singing with power and intensity isn’t about gender or body type. There are techniques to learn, from basic to complex. The variety of artistic paths out there just blew me away.”

The site also boasts a user-friendly interface with search options and artist recommendations. It also traces a historical path, showcasing how these vocal techniques have evolved from the 1980s to today.

The archive is a project by Spectacles Bonzaï, a Montreal company with a history of supporting independent music. Gueuleuses joins their other digital ventures like salleindependantes.com, a platform for independent venues, and Aire Ouverte, a webzine focused on emerging artists.
